Good to see today’s announcement that Scotland is rolling out free public access Wi-Fi hot spots in government buildings in cities such as Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Perth.
Across the globe, access to the Internet from virtually anywhere has become a major priority for governments striving to improve the quality of life and encourage economic development. Once the core infrastructure, fiber backbone or wireless connectivity, is in place the installation and activation of “hot spots” such as those planned for Scotland can take place quickly.
In the U.S., there are a host of similar initiatives from municipal and state projects to programs designed to bring broadband to rural and underserved areas. We understand the value of broadband access and encourage the ongoing development and funding of these programs not only in the U.S., but in emerging economies around the world.
